K–12

The Monnig Meteorite Gallery welcomes all groups from K-12 education, from public, private, and homeschool classrooms. We offer both on-site and off-site educational programs to all schools in the DFW metroplex.

ON-SITE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Our on-site educational programs for K-12 are available in two formats.

The traditional educational program consists of a guided tour of the Gallery. Tours will engage students in hands-on, minds-on activities, as they have the opportunity to trace the formation and breakup of planets, asteroids, and comets from which meteorites originated, explore their long journey through space and their fall to Earth, learn about their recovery, and discover the wealth of information they hold for scientists. The length and content of the program varies depending on the size of the group and the objectives and needs of the teacher and students.

Curriculum specific tours are also available. Each student will be given a workbook that they are expected to fill in as they are guided through the Gallery. These tours will take a minimum of one hour and are tailored to meet specific STAAR objectives. Teachers will be provided with a guide that details which STAAR objectives are addressed and how they are discussed during the tour. The following STAAR specific tours are available for grades 3 through 12:

  • Science
  • Math
  • Reading and Language Arts
  • History

Interested in meteorites but cannot come to us?

We are aware due to budget constraints and large class sizes that many schools are unable to visit the Monnig Gallery in person. Let the meteorites come to you! We regret that we cannot offer off-site visits to homeschool groups unless you are part of a cooperative that meets in a formal setting. The following off-site programs can be tailored to fit your needs:

  • Careers in Education and Science
  • Introduction to Meteorites
  • The Geology of our Solar System
  • Mars
  • The Moon
